I'm at a Combination Gym and Nail Salon

This morning I went to the gym and did week 3 of the Fitnessista's winter shape up again, and while I was there, I saw another super awkward thing - there was a woman on the treadmill filing/ buffing her nails.  And she wasn't even walking on the treadmill, she was just standing with her feet on either side of the tread (I think that's what it's called...).  Just watching TV, and doing her nails.  Naturally.  Um, ew.

Post-gym, I made myself a protein smoooooothie, using some of the frozen fruit I picked up yesterday.

It had a scoop of Sun Warrior vanilla protein powder, 1 cup of frozen blueberries, about 1.5 cups of rice milk, 2 big handfuls of spinach, and 1/2 of a frozen banana.  Mm mm good.

After my smoothie and shower, it was time to get baking.  I planned to make these cookies Thursday night, but after I ate dinner and watched 30 Rock, I was not motivated to get off the couch.

They're the same as the ones I made for my mom's birthday - peanut butter and chocolate chip.

I gave up chocolate for Lent, so I couldn't try out the cookies.  However, there did end up being some batter left without chocolate chips in it (I wonder how that happened...) so I made 3 plain peanut butter cookies for myself, topped with a sprinkle of sea salt.  I mean, I had to make sure they were edible, right?

This was all that was left of my 3 cookies by the time I got a picture.  They're just so tempting right out of the oven!  I finished that almost-eaten one and forced myself to save the last one for tomorrow.

The only reason it will actually still be there tomorrow is because I drove to my parents' house last minute for dinner with some family friends who I've known my whole life.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far!

Do you like sweet + savory (like the peanut butter cookies + sea salt)?  It is my absolute favorite flavor combination.  And I'm pretty sure it has an addictive quality.  Just saying.

Song of the day:

"Oh My God" by Ida Maria.  I love the energy in this song - it's on my workout playlist right now and always give me a little extra surge of power.

  2. That protein smoothie does look really good! I'll have to try that one.

How do you manage making time in law school to cook so many great meals and exercise? I try to fit in exercise every day (I'm a 2L), but my time for it is just so limited it seems, much less cooking.

    1. Hi Nikki,

I'm a 2L as well, and I hear you on the limited time thing. Last semester was super, super crazy for me and I definitely wasn't as able to do as much cooking, but this semester I'm taking fewer credits and I'm not interning, so I've got a bit more time. As far as exercising goes, I've tried to make it a part of my daily routine and go at the same time each day (if possible), kind of like it's a class. Of course sometimes I still have to be flexible, but I think it becomes second-nature to work out if I'm doing it regularly.

As for cooking, I pretty much only cook and bake on the weekends. Then I eat the leftovers during the week, and, if possible, I'll freeze some, too. Some days I don't get home from class until 8 or 8:30, so it's a lifesaver to have something healthy already prepared. I also try to have an idea of what meals I'll eat throughout the week, which help me not to snack thoughtlessly or pick up something unhealthy that I'm craving.

Of course everyone's schedule is different, but I would most recommend trying to make a big batch of something on the weekend and refrigerate/ freeze it. I'm making stuffed peppers in my crock pot while I'm at school today - I'll post the recipe tomorrow. A crock pot can be another good option to save time and have something healthy ready for you when you walk in the door. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks again for reading, and I hope your week is off to a great start :)
